When Ruth Gottesman’s husband passed away in 2022, she discovered a surprise: $1 billion in Berkshire Hathaway stock left by her husband.

Gottesman, 96, shared that her husband’s only instruction was to “do whatever you think is right with it.” Uncertain initially, Gottesman sought advice from her children and eventually found a purpose for the unexpected wealth.

After deliberation, Gottesman decided to donate the entire sum to the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, the poorest borough of New York City. Her motive was clear: she aimed to support students by providing them with free tuition.

With Gottesman’s generous donation, the Albert Einstein College of Medicine announced that students’ tuition fees would be covered indefinitely.
