The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has officially declared its intention to enforce the ban on alcoholic beverages produced in sachets less than 200ml.
The agency confirmed that the deadline for manufacturers to halt the production of such drinks in sachets and PET bottles, initially set for 2018, expired on January 31, 2024. Effective February 1, 2024, NAFDAC will commence the enforcement of the ban.
Mojisola Adeyeye, the director-general of NAFDAC, clarified that the ban was the outcome of a collaborative effort by a multilateral committee. The committee’s strategy involved a phased reduction in production by 50% by 2020, leading to the complete prohibition on January 31, 2024.
Adeyeye emphasized that the ban was not abrupt but part of a concerted effort to address the accessibility and affordability of alcoholic beverages packaged in pocket-friendly sizes, particularly concerning their appeal to children.
