Airbus has inaugurated a new automated A321XLR aircraft equipment installation hangar in Hamburg, a move aimed at modernizing and digitizing its industrial processes while expanding ramp-up capacity for the A320 program. The facility, spanning 9,600 square meters and designated as H259, will focus on the assembly and installation of components for the rear fuselages of the A321XLR aircraft. It incorporates cutting-edge technologies including automated logistics, digital systems, and testing stations for real-time monitoring of fuselage sections.

André Walter, Head of Airbus Commercial Aircraft Production in Germany, emphasized the significance of the Hamburg site in A321XLR development and production. The new installation hangar not only bolsters capacity for manufacturing A321 fuselages but also plays a vital role in supporting ramp-up initiatives. It serves as a testament to Hamburg’s importance within the broader Airbus network.

Anna Christmann, the Federal Government Coordinator of German Aerospace Policy, hailed the investment in the A321XLR equipment installation hangar as a pivotal step towards advancing aviation’s transition to climate neutrality. She underscored the transformation as crucial for positioning Germany as a forward-looking and competitive player in the aerospace sector. The hangar, with its state-of-the-art technologies, will play a key role in achieving this goal.

The advanced installation hangar is equipped with an automated ‘pulse line’ comprising eight stations for the assembly of nearly 24-meter-long fuselage sections. These sections are outfitted with electrical and mechanical systems, windows, floor panels, and external antennas. Following system installation, each fuselage section undergoes extensive testing. The hangar’s capabilities are expected to significantly contribute to Airbus’ efforts in meeting production demands for the A321XLR.
