Nigeria Data Protection Commission Urges Organizations to Register for Data Protection Compliance Monitoring
The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has directed banks, telecom operators, educational institutions, government parastatals, and other organizations handling data in Nigeria to register with the Commission for data protection compliance monitoring by the end of the year. The registration is in accordance with the provisions of the Act, mandating all data controllers and processors to register within six months of the law’s enactment. Registered organizations are also required to file their annual audit report with the commission between January and March each year.
NDPC’s National Commissioner, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, highlighted the importance of data protection in preserving the rights of individuals and boosting investor confidence. The registration aims to ensure all data processors and controllers in Nigeria comply with data protection regulations, enhancing trust in the economy and attracting foreign direct investments.
Data subjects, including every Nigerian with data held by the government or private organizations, have rights such as giving consent, rectification of incorrect data, portability, erasure, and refusal of processing. Data controllers and processors are responsible for securing the data with appropriate technological and organizational measures.
