50 New Power Generation and Metering Licenses are Issued by NERC.

The Nigerian Federal Government granted 50 new power generation and metering permits in the last quarter of last year, according to a report by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

The report stated that two new generation licenses were approved, adding a combined capacity of 56.50MW, and two on-grid embedded generation licenses were amended.

Furthermore, thirteen mini-grid permits and fourteen registration certificates for mini-grids with capacities below 1MW were authorized. The NERC also approved the amendment/renewal of seven captive power generation permits with a total capacity of 65.36MW.

In addition to power generation permits, the NERC also approved applications from seven meter installers, three meter manufacturers, and two meter importers during the same period. Power generation and metering have been major challenges in Nigeria’s power sector, with generation remaining below 5000MW for the past two years.

The report revealed that the country’s 26 power plants generated a total of 4,497.32MW in the reviewed quarter, significantly below the estimated 30,000MW necessary for sufficiency, according to experts.
