Nigerians can now request that their commercial banks issue them a debit card that also serves as their National Identity Card at no additional cost above the standard debit card costs.
This comes as the Federal Executive Council authorized a document from the National Identity Management Commission on Wednesday, allowing banks to print debit cards that also serve as National identity cards.
Pantami stated that, despite the fact that the NIMC Act 2007 only requires Nigerians to have a National Identity Number and not necessarily a printed card, demand for cards has increased.
The minister said that the NIMC and the CBN signed a non-disclosure agreement to preserve card applicants’ privacy and confidentiality.
Similarly, Pantami disclosed that the FEC approved a document recommending the deployment of an automated system to integrate NINs with individual SIM cards.
