President Muhammadu Buhari has urged the Senate to authorize the payment of judgment debts granted to the federal government by various courts.

The president stated that the judgment debts were awarded in several currencies, totaling $556,712,584,01; £98,526,013; and N226,280,801,801,64. Mr Buhari’s plea was contained in a letter read aloud during the Senate session on Wednesday by Senate President Ahmad Lawan.

The debts were awarded in litigations against federal ministries, departments, and agencies of the federal government, according to the president’s letter, by the issuing of promissory notes.

He mentioned the Federal Executive Council (FEC) had approved settlement of the judgement debts in its sitting on 29 March.
