The Federal Economic Council authorized the expenditure of N129.8 billion for a number of projects within the Ministry of the Niger Delta, particularly the UNEP’s mandate for Ogoni cleanup.
Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President for Media and Publicity, informed media of this.
He said the money would provide for the second phase of the Ogoni water project and the central remediation of newly-identified hydrocarbon-impacted locations.
The Environmental Assessment of Ogoniland by the United Nations Environment Programme was published in August 2011.
The report, which was commissioned and given to the Goodluck Jonathan Administration, recommended that Ogoniland be thoroughly cleaned up, polluted areas be restored, and all ongoing oil production be stopped.
