The Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) has been questioned by the House of Representatives regarding 1014 projects funded by the Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF), including an e-Library project that cost more than N2 billion to complete.
The House scoffed at the Commission’s demand for N700 billion in order to provide coverage for the 27 million Nigerians who do not currently have access to telecommunications. “The difficulty is that the NCC has given itself the power to annually decide what it is going to allocate to USPF,” said Mark Gbillah.
According to the papers, administrative costs increased from N19,000,000 to N127,000,000. The cost of hiring employees also increased dramatically.
They were summoned to appear before the Committee alongside the NCC on Wednesday, May 10, 2023. Danbatta while responding said the USPF regulations stipulates that the Commission would determine the contributions from time to time.
