Senate Probes Passports Renewal, Issuance Delay

The Upper house has decided to look into the reasons behind the Nigeria Immigration Service’s delays in issuing and renewing passports. The Senate’s Committee on Interior was given a mandate to look into the delays in passport issue and renewal at Tuesday’s plenary session.

The committee was also given permission by the Senate to look into the NIS’s contract for printing passports.The order was given on Tuesday at the start of plenary in response to a motion made by Senator Uche Ekwunife, who said that acquiring a passport is a difficult process for Nigerians.

Despite the NIS’s stated processing timeframe of six weeks, it now takes Nigerians three to six months to receive their passports.It has grown to be quite challenging forpassports to be processed in Lagos, Port Harcourt and Abuja, so many other places
