According to the Federal Government, there are an estimated 90,000 malaria-related fatalities and 55 million malaria cases in Nigeria each year.
At a news conference held to mark World Malaria Day with the theme “Time to deliver zero malaria: invest, innovate, implement,” and the call to action “Act now,” the minister of health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, revealed this.
Dr. Ehanire, who was represented by Mamman Mamuda, the permanent secretary of the ministry, claimed that despite efforts by the government and its allies to combat malaria’s effects in the nation, the country still accounts for 27% of global malaria cases and 32% of global malaria deaths.
According to estimates, 70% of malaria treatment costs are out-of-pocket, and the average cost for Nigerians is N2,280. Consequently, we must continue to fight to achieve zero malaria by 2030, in line with the World Health Organisation’s global technical strategy,” he said.
