The Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transport Workers of Nigeria has received federal government approval for trade union recognition.
With this permission, AUATWN becomes the first government-approved trade union for e-hailing drivers in Africa, according to Ibrahim Ayoade, the founding secretary-general and former president of the National Union of Professional App-based Workers.
Comrade Ayoade commented on the news, stating that the fight to unionize app-based drivers began in 2016 after Uber reduced the revenue of its drivers by 40% without their consent.
Therefore, he urged drivers all throughout the nation to join the union as they fight for more favorable working conditions.
