According to Microsoft Corp. (MSFT.O) President Brad Smith, the company plans to ensure internet access for 100 million more individuals in Africa by 2025 by working with a satellite provider and laying the groundwork for longer-term cloud adoption.
Through its Airband project, it has since 2017 assisted in enhancing connectivity for 50 million individuals, including nearly 10 million in Africa. With this venture, Microsoft is utilizing satellite technology for the first time in an effort to connect remote locations that previously lacked connection.
Microsoft announced that it is collaborating with Viasat Inc (VSAT.O) to increase access in Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and other nations worldwide in news related to the U.S.-Africa Leaders’ Summit. Microsoft currently employs more than 500 engineers in Nairobi and more than 200 in Lagos, he said.
