According to the country’s 2021 census, Nigeria is one of the top 5 countries of birth for recent immigrants to Canada.
Nigerians were fifth in 2021 as a source of immigration into Canada, moving up around eight places from their ranking in 2016; when they were ranked thirteenth.
According to data published by Statistics Canada in its report Portrait of Immigration to Canada; Nigerians took the fifth place as the primary country of birth of new immigrants to Canada; accounting for 3% of recent immigrants from 2016 to 2021. This means that nearly one in thirty recent immigrants were born in Nigeria.
Canada has set a goal of bringing in 431,645 new permanent residents as part of the Immigration Plan for 2022–2024. A record number of permanent residents have entered Canada.
