A Director in the office of the Accountant General of the Federation, Alhaji Salau Zubairu, has said Nigeria and Tanzania are the only African countries rated as complying with implementing the International Public Sector Accounting Standards.
Zubairu said this at a sensitisation workshop organised by the Kwara State Ministry of Finance in Ilorin on Thursday.
He said, “Today, Nigeria has been placed among the countries that are implementing the International Public Sector Accounting Standards.
“Just last week, I was in Maputo; I remember that the Tanzanian Minister of Finance said that Nigeria and Tanzania are the only country in Africa that are IPSAS accrual compliant. That is the way to go.
“That is to say for us as a nation we should be proud of what we are doing and we must sincerely commend the efforts of the Kwara State government in this direction.”
The Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, in his address, said his administration was making deliberate efforts to further open government books using standard institutional frameworks for transparency and accountability.
AbdulRazaq, who was represented by the Secretary to the Government, Prof. Mamman Jibril, said, “Today, we are taking another bold step to strengthen institutional frameworks to promote transparency and accountability.
This is meant to standardise financial reporting of the government. It is a system that brings public expenditure under closer scrutiny.”
